Comparison of Surgical Methods for Treating Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors

When compared to laparoscopic resection, endoscopic full-thickness resection and endoscopic submucosal dissection were found to have less trauma, faster recovery, shorter hospitalization time, and lower hospital cost in the treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). All 3 methods showed good curative effect, good safety, and good prognosis in this patient population.

The retrospective study included clinical data from 105 patients who were diagnosed with GIST at Yixing People’s Hospital, Jiangsu, China, between March 2019 and March 2021. Patients were divided into 3 groups: laparoscopic resection (n = 20), endoscopic full-thickness resection (n = 27) and endoscopic submucosal dissection (n = 58).

Clinical data, surgical conditions, complications, and postoperative conditions of the patients were recorded retrospectively. Patients were reexamined at 3-, 6-, and 12-months post-surgery, and then followed up once a year for survival and tumor recurrence or metastasis.

The operation time for the endoscopic full-thickness resection and endoscopic submucosal dissection groups were shorter than that of the laparoscopic resection group, with endoscopic full-thickness resection time shorter than that of endoscopic submucosal dissection. Intraoperative blood loss was less in endoscopic full-thickness resection and endoscopic submucosal dissection groups than the laparoscopic resection group.

In addition, for both the endoscopic full-thickness resection and endoscopic submucosal dissection groups, postoperative abdominal pain, postoperative hospital stays, and total hospitalization costs were lower than those of the laparoscopic resection group.

There were no significant differences found in the complete resection rate, or total incidence of complications (all P < 0.05). There were no instances of recurrence, metastasis, or GIST-related deaths in any of the 3 groups.

The study authors noted that, due to the study’s small size and being limited to a single center, there is room for improvement in future research plans.
