Policy analysis for gastrointestinal cancer care in MENA region
Background
With rapid population growth, population aging and changing lifestyle at MENA Region (Middle East & North Africa countries) number of newly diagnosed (GI) cancer cases will be increased. This will lead to create health care need like reforming treatment polices, changing protocols, generation new resources and screening policies. Analysis for the current (GI) cancer polices at MENA region will support health care policy makers and health authorities for enhancement health services presented to cancer patient. The main objective for this research is analysis of all elements influencing on (GI) cancer management in MENA Region in order to achieve the following objectives: enhancement patients’ quality of life, health care resources enhancement, and will lead to health system enhancement.
Methods
Integration between data analysis from cancer registries, National Health Accounts, interviews with health care stakeholders using validated questionnaires including (oncologists, pharmacists, nurses and patients’ representatives) in the following countries: Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and Iraq. EORTC Quality Of Life questionnaire was implemented for collecting quality of life data. Time horizon for data analysis was previous 5 Years. Sensitivity analysis for all research parameters sensitivity analysis was conducted for guaranteeing robustness of data.
Results
Number of newly diagnosed cased increased estimated cancer incidence (per 100,000) Colorectal cancer was taking the high incidence of all (GI) cancer cases. Trends in cancer are related to demographic changes. 55% of health expenditure are related to cancer treatment 33% of them going to second lines treatment. Indirect costs representing 44% of total health expenditure. Out of pocket representing average 15% of total health expenditure. Percentage of effective preventing and screening polices 45%, reforming lifestyle polices achievement 30%. Successful Governance achievement 55%.
Conclusions
Based on previous results reforming and modifications of GI polices is going to be a strong need for enhancement of health services presented to (GI) cancer patients. Innovative medicines might have positive impact on reducing economic burden and quality of life enhancement, data registries need to be more validated and updated and finally enhancing public health polices will lead to positive impact on treatment polices.
