Pediatric Hidradenitis Suppurativa Patients Vary in Disease Presentation and Response to Treatment
Lisa Kuhns, PhD
A recent study published in the Journal of Dermatological Treatment analyzed the epidemiology, disease presentation, and treatments in pediatric patients with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS).
“We investigated disease characteristics, prescribed treatments, and treatment responses in a pediatric HS cohort,” explained the study authors.
Researchers identified pediatric patients with HS through an electronic medical record search. Patients must have been diagnosed with HS before age 18 and data on demographics, disease presentation, and treatment were collected and analyzed.
Patients were aged a mean of 12.6 years when symptoms presented. Male patients were associated with axillary involvement and females were associated with groin involvement. Females also had a younger age of symptom onset and higher likelihood of HS treatment. Clindamycin, doxycycline, and benzoyl peroxide were the most frequently prescribed treatments.
“Pediatric HS patients have varied presentations and response to treatment,” concluded the study authors. “Further studies are needed to characterize the disease and the most effective treatments,” they continued.
