Medical Cannabis Products Used by Patients to Treat Dermatologic Conditions
Consumers use medical cannabis products (MCPs) to treat dermatologic conditions, according to a recent study published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology.
Researchers aimed to address consumer perspectives on and utilization of MCPs to treat dermatologic conditions by conducting a survey of the SurveyMonkey Rewards Panel population. Adult users were asked about usage patterns and beliefs on MCP used to treat dermatologic conditions.
A total of 504 surveys were completed with 17.6% of the respondents reporting use of an over-the-counter cannabis product without dermatologist recommendation to treat dermatologic conditions. The most common indications were acne and psoriasis. Among the 15.3% who used MCPs and consulted with a dermatologist, the most common indications included psoriasis and rosacea. The most common indications among the 7.8% who used an MCP which required a Department of Health-approved card included acne and psoriasis.
“Consumers are interested in and are using MCPs for dermatologic indications, most commonly for inflammatory skin disorders,” concluded the study authors. “Targeted education for dermatologists is recommended,” they added.
