Conn. Man Shot in Head Crashes into Ambulance

Jan. 11—BRIDGEPORT—The remnants of the scene of a crash where a male was shot in the head and hit an ambulance with a vehicle Wednesday evening remained under investigation for several hours after the initial call.

Greater Bridgeport Transit buses were rerouted and, later that evening, cars slowly turned at blocked-off intersections, trying to get a glimpse of what prompted the police activity.

Officers were dispatched to the area of Central and Barnum avenues shortly before 8 p.m. Dispatch reports indicated the person shot was heavily bleeding and had crashed into an ambulance.

Police Capt. Roderick Porter said all police know is that the male victim was shot in the head and may have been attempting to drive himself to the hospital.

"We really don't know who he is," Porter said. "We're trying to establish who he is."

Porter said police think the victim came from the area of Connecticut and Stratford avenues. He said officers are trying to backtrack and figure out where the shooting took place.

As for the victim's condition, Porter said he didn't have information on the severity of the gunshot wound. Porter said he was being treated at Bridgeport Hospital.

By crashing into the ambulance, Porter said the victim was at least able to get some medical attention right away.

A white car, with its front end significantly smashed in, sat on Barnum Avenue near its intersection with Mill Hill Avenue.

Cop cars blocked off the intersections of Barnum and Mill Hill avenues, Barnum and Seaview avenues, Barnum and Central avenues and Central Avenue and Ford Place.

The person who was shot was immediately taken to nearby Bridgeport Hospital -- though it was not clear if that was his destination while driving the vehicle post-shooting.

Porter said he couldn't confirm whether someone was being transported by the ambulance when the gunshot wound victim crashed into it. It was not immediately known if anyone in the amulance suffered injuries during the crash.
