Wound Monitoring App Improves Patient Care

Researchers from the Wisconsin Institute of Surgical Outcomes Research at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, have developed a smartphone application that may help detect surgical site infections, prevent hospital readmissions, and improve patient care. The WoundCare app allows patients to remotely send images of their surgical wounds for monitoring by nurses as well as answer a few brief questions through the HIPAA-compliant software. In a study of 40 vascular surgery patients, the overall submission rate was 90.2%; submissions were reviewed within an average 9.7 hours and resulted in detecting 7 wound complications and 1 false negative.
