Wound Botulism Underrecognized Among Heroin Users

Wound botulism symptoms, including droopy eyelids, blurred or double vision, slurred speech, and paralysis, closely resemble those of opioid intoxication and make it increasingly more difficult to recognize in a patient. A recent outbreak of wound botulism in California has been linked to black tar heroin use and is concerning health officials as they work to raise awareness. While wound botulism is still considered rare, this association could encourage health care providers to perform thorough searches of patients for wounds.
