Spider Silk Has Wound Healing Potential

A recently published study has proposed a novel use for insect-spun silk: artificial skin and wound dressings. Researchers in Sweden and India combined the silk fibroin from silkworms and the silk proteins from spiders to create 2 types of constructs with wound healing potential. The first is a nanofibrous matrix that serves as a bioactive wound dressing; the second is microporous sponges cultured with human skin cells to become an artificial skin graft. These fibers feature cell-binding motifs, antimicrobial peptides, and growth factor domains. The researchers hope to test both products in animal models in the near future.
