Outpatient Care Can Decrease Amputations

A recent study from Stanford University (Stanford, CA) demonstrated an association between an outpatient wound care center and improved peripheral vascular practice and decreased amputation rates. After the university opened a new outpatient wound center in 2013, researchers assessed the impact of this center on the practice patterns of tertiary care vascular surgical practice. In a retrospective comparison of the 3-year periods both before (662 procedures) and immediately after (1085 procedures) the center opened, the researchers found a 64% increase in volume of lower extremity interventions and a statistically significant increase in the number of patients with wounds. In addition, multivariable adjusted analysis found that treatment after the wound center opened was associated with a significant reduction in risk of major amputation.
