Keynote Session to Focus on Traumatic Wound Care

  Wounds as a result of trauma change lives and their aftermath can be years of pain and limited function. These wounds may be inflicted and the sequelae experienced abroad during times of war or at home during terrorist attacks. One such attack occurred during the 2013 Boston Marathon. During the SAWC Fall 2014 general session, Emily C. Keller, MD, will discuss this tragedy’s effect on the city and her team’s attempts to improve the physical health and emotional scars associated with the wounds treated through novel laser techniques.

  Additionally, Nathan Uebelhoer, MD, will discuss his approach to similar types of traumatic wounds he’s encountered as a military officer and the difference he has made in people’s lives. The session will be held Oct. 16 at 9:40 a.m.

  Visit Today’s Wound Clinic (TWC) online for a video previewing the session “Healthcare Reform: A Simplified Practical Update for Clinicians” from faculty presenter Guy L. Clifton, MD, author of the book Flatlined: Resuscitating American Medicine. The session will discuss recent legislative changes that are leading to many questions from healthcare practitioners who may be having difficulty sorting through the convoluted implications of healthcare reform. This simplified update will address initiatives such as wound care quality measures, medical homes, and physician payment rules per the Sunshine Act, and focus on policies set to be implemented. It will also provide practical tips on how to navigate through these changes with greater confidence in wound care practice. Learning objectives will include clarifying which wound care outcomes will be measured by healthcare reform and how clinicians need to report outcomes, and explain how healthcare reform impacts the wound care center, hospital, and private practice.

  The session will be held Oct. 17 at 9 a.m.

Physician to Discuss Non-Diabetic Osteomyelitis

  Using diabetic osteomyelitis as a model, Damien M. Dauphinee, DPM, FACFAS, FAENS, CWS-P, medical director of the Comprehensive Wound Center at the Heart Hospital Baylor Denton (TX), will explore differences between diabetic and non-diabetic patients with osteomyelitis in his session “Osteomyelitis in Non-Diabetics: Do the Same Rules Apply?” Lecture topics will include the surgical approach to these patients with regard to foot and ankle osteomyelitis and whether there are any significant differences in the approach between the two groups.
