Wound Care Product Earns ‘Good Design’ Award
AlliquaTM BioMedical Inc. (Langhorne, PA) has received a GOOD DESIGN® award for its UltraMIST® Ultrasound Healing Therapy System from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and the Metropolitan Arts Press Ltd. The awards are presented to the world’s leading designers to acknowledge creativity, modernization, advancement, and outstanding products that stretch the boundaries of average design.
The UltraMIST System is Alliqua’s latest addition to its line of MIST Therapy® products. MIST Therapy involves the use of noncontact, low-frequency ultrasound delivered through a saline mist to accelerate wound healing. Unlike conventional wound treatments that are limited to treating the surface, this product delivers ultrasound energy into and below the wound bed to stimulate cells and shorten the healing process. Over 1.4 million MIST Therapy treatments have been performed to date, benefiting a variety of patients. The UltraMIST System was developed in conjunction with Logic PDTM (Minneapolis), an engineering design house known for its expertise with medical devices.

Emergency Bandage to the Rescue
OSNovative Systems Inc. (Santa Clara, CA), an advanced wound management and combat/emergency medicine products company, has launched the EnluxtraTM-E, a “smart” emergency bandage specifically designed for victims of terrorist attacks, military personnel on the battlefield, and disaster preparedness.
The bandage is based on the Enluxtra wound dressing, whereby its super-absorbent “smart” polymer dressing material absorbs and retains fluid even under compression so that it may stop the bleeding and deprive pathogens of water necessary for their replication. Company Licensed Technology from Johns Hopkins University
Gemstone Biotherapeutics LLC (Baltimore, MD), a regenerative medicine company, has exclusively licensed new wound healing technology from Johns Hopkins University. The new license will allow Gemstone Biotherapeutics to develop and commercialize advanced wound healing solutions.
The technology, pioneered by Jeremy Walston, MD, and Peter Abadir, MD, has the potential to provide a treatment option superior to current products to older patients who are living with diabetes-related chronic wounds. The product will target diabetic foot ulcers, a growing and costly healthcare dilemma. Walston and Abadir have identified a mitochondrial angiotensin receptor system that becomes less functional with age. This system likely contributes to age and disease-related declines in multiple tissue types. Doctors also discovered that angiotensin receptor blockers, a category of drugs approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for hypertension, can reinvigorate this system.
