National Collaborative Aims to Reduce Clinician Burnout

According to recent research, health-care clinicians of all specialties and disciplines are experiencing high rates of burnout due to stress.

More than 50 percent of physicians in the United States report signifi cant symptoms of burnout, a syndrome char-acterized by a high degree of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization (and a low sense of personal accomplishment at work), according to the National Acad-emy of Medicine (NAM). In response to this troubling trend, NAM has launched its Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being and Resilience, a network of more than 60 organizations commit-ted to reducing clinician burnout.

According to collaborative offi cials the three main goals of the group are to  improve the baseline understanding of challenges to clinician well-being, raise the visibility of clinician stress and burnout, and elevate evidence-based, multidisciplinary solutions that will improve patient care by caring for the caregiver.

The collaborative is composed of fi ve working groups that will identify evidence-based strategies to improve clinician well-being at both the indi-vidual and systems levels, offi cials said.

Products and activities of these four working groups include an online knowledge hub, a series of discussion papers, an all-encompassing conceptual model that refl ects the domains affect-ing clinician well-being, and a common set of defi nitions.
