At-Home PrEP Test Kits Discounted for World AIDS Day
Through December 7, 2018, the telemedicine company Nurx is discounting its human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention service line in recognition of the 30th anniversary of World AIDS Day.
Nurx is dropping the cost of an at-home test kit used by its healthcare providers to determine if a patient is an appropriate candidate for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to $30. For patients paying out of pocket, the cost is normally $199. If PrEP is determined appropriate, patients can use Nurx to receive and fill a prescription for Truvada (emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) for PrEP, which is delivered to their home for convenience and discretion.
Nurx offers its services in 20 states and Washington, DC.
“We're committed to making sure everyone has access to the care they need, and World AIDS Day provides us with an opportunity to unite in the fight against the escalating HIV rate,” said Hans Gangeskar, Nurx CEO and cofounder, in a company press release. “PrEP is a highly effective at preventing HIV and is significantly underutilized in many communities, especially in areas of the country which are seeing the highest incidence of new HIV infections.”
In an attempt to make PrEP more affordable, Nurx works with payment assistance programs to help cover the cost. The company began offering PrEP through its telemedicine service in 2016 and is currently the leading online provider of the medication.
