HHS Announces 106 More Accountable Care Organizations
Department of Health and Human Services secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced this week that 106 new accountable care organizations have been formed. There are now more than 250 ACOs created since the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in March 2010.
In an ACO, providers work together to coordinate care for a group of patients. They must follow 33 quality measures established by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. If ACOs meet the quality standards, they can share in any savings with CMS. According to the HHS news release, the federal government could save as much as $940 million over 4 years because of ACOs.
