Prime Therapeutics CEO Discusses Integrated Care

During a keynote address at a conference yesterday, Prime Therapeutics chief executive officer Eric Elliott discussed the importance of health plans and pharmacy benefit managers working together to address issues such as rising costs of specialty medications and an increase in the number of people who are chronically ill, according to a company news release. Mr. Elliott urged providers to collaborate to help patients who have multiple conditions, which could lead to better outcomes as well as reduced costs. Based in Minnesota, Prime Therapeutics is a PBM owned by 13 Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans, subsidiaries or affiliates of the plans. "Never has truly integrated care been more important," Mr. Elliott said at the Pharmaceutical Care Management Association (PCMA)'s Managed Markets Educational Forum. "Not just integrated delivery of care in the form of sophisticated mail systems and not just integrated claims, but truly integrated care where the physician, the care system and the pharmacy provider see what is happening with the patient and have the right information at the right time to make the best decision for the patient's optimal outcome."
