BRIEF: Ambulance, car hit by shots fired on Dan Ryan

Tony Briscoe

May 08--An ambulance carrying a patient and a car were hit when someone opened fire on the Dan Ryan Expressway, but no injuries were reported, according to Illinois State Police.

The Superior ambulance and the car were struck by the gunfire about 3:15 p.m. Thursday as they headed north on Interstate 94 near 31st Street, a state police sergeant said.

The ambulance was occupied by at least one employee and a patient in the rear, while the car had two occupants.

The ambulance rushed to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center. The car exited at 25th Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard.

It's unclear if either vehicle was the target, state police said.

Investigators closed the two far right lanes from near 18th Street to near 41st Street to search the area.
