Elementary School Student in Okla. Recognized as Hero

May 26--Israel Elijah Martin knew what to do when his grandmother needed emergency medical assistance, and for his efforts, he received a commendation.

Israel, 8, received the Call of Duty Hero Award during a school assembly at Irving Elementary School. The award was presented by representatives of the Muskogee fire and police departments and Muskogee County Emergency Medical Service.

"We were thrilled to participate," said Rebecca Williamson of Muskogee County EMS. "We think he did a fantastic job."

Williamson said that Israel was very mature and was able to call 911, remain calm and get help for someone who needed it.

"We're proud of him," she said. "He did a great job."

Family friend Katie Henry said when Israel called 911 on May 17, he provided emergency crews with information about her insurance, medication and other details they needed regarding the situations. He also rode in the ambulance with her to the hospital.

This was not the first time Israel has called 911, Henry said. In January, he called for emergency assistance when his grandmother was injured after she fell on the ice.

Regarding his recent action, Henry wrote on her Facebook page: "I want to nominate this little boy for being a hero! If it wasn't for him his grandma would not have another chance at life. This is an 8-year-old boy, Israel Elijah Martin. He called 911 when his grandmother needed help because she could not breathe. EMS, ER nurses, and ICU nurses, including her doctor, went on and on about how much of a hero he was and how he saved her life. And if it wasn't for him being calm and telling them everything they needed to know, she would not have even made it to the hospital. I'm so proud of you Israel for being her guardian angel. She still needs prayers for healing. Please share this with friends for prayers and to show Israel how big a hero he really is!"

Henry said the young hero was surprised and excited to be recognized during a school assembly.
