Michigan Medic Dies During Sandy Relief Effort in New York
A Michigan paramedic died Sunday in New York while helping Hurricane Sandy victims.
Capt. Steve Stevenson, an AMR Operations Supervisor in Grand Rapids, died of complications from an aortic aneurysm.
Funeral services for Stevenson have not been set as yet.
“Steve made an indelible mark on the lives of the many colleagues he inspired and the friends and family he dearly loved,” AMR President Mark Bruning said in a prepared statement. “He was dedicated to serving the people of Grand Rapids and his passion and commitment will be missed.”
Stevenson worked for AMR for more than 26 years.
Dale Feldhauser, General Manager of the AMR Grand Rapids operation, remembered: “Steve Stevenson loved helping people. He was not only an outstanding paramedic and supervisor, he was also a great human being. He was a giving and caring person and he made big impact on everyone in our operation and the people we serve.”
Stevenson also was a captain with the Otsego Fire Department.
In a statement on the department’s Facebook page, fire officials said of their 24-year veteran: “Otsego Fire lost a great Officer, Friend, Father and Mentor this evening. Captain Steve Stevenson passed away in New York while working relief efforts for Hurricane Sandy. He was due to come home today. After 13 hours in surgery he succumbed to the toll that was placed on him. He leaves behind a wonderful daughter, wife, mother, father and siblings as well. Those that knew Cap'n Stevenson can attest that he was a brilliant Officer, a great Instructor, a genius of a Paramedic and the best friend anyone could ask for. He will be greatly missed.”
