Man Falls From Conn. Elevated Highway While Trying to Help Crash Victim

Oct. 08--HARTFORD -- A man who stopped to help an injured motorist after a crash fell from the elevated highway after apparently suffering a medical emergency of his own, police said.

Richard Herron, 83, of Elkton, Md. experienced some sort of medical problem after he stopped at the scene of a rollover crash on I-84 east about 3 a.m., according to the state police. He fell to the ground below, they said.

Herron had stopped to help Sheila Jenkins, 45, who had cuts and a pain in her left arm after rolling her Ford Explorer, police said.

The crash scene was clear by 6 a.m.

Jenkins had been trying to change lanes while driving in the rain east near exit 49, state police said. She moved to the right while negotiating a curve and lost control, veering abruptly to the left, they said.

The front of the driver's side of the sports utility vehicle struck the jersey barrier, and the SUV rolled several times, police said.

She was transported to Hartford Hospital to be treated for her injuries, police said. The extent of Herron's injuries was not clear.
