Calif. Woman Hurt After Falling Into Empty Septic Tank
Nov. 15--A woman in her 60s fell into abandoned septic pit while watering her lawn Tuesday morning.
The Adelanto woman was outside about 8 :50 a.m. when the ground she was standing on collapsed, sending her into an empty septic pit, according to a San Bernardino County fire news release. The woman's sister, who heard her crying for help, ran to a fire station two blocks away.
When the San Bernardino County Fire's Urban Search an Rescue team responded to the 11800 block of Hardy Avenue, they found the woman standing at the bottom of the hole, about nine feet down.
Firefighters provided supplemental ventilation to the pit and checked for oxygen levels and hazardous gases, according to the news release. When the opening was secure, rescuers were lowered into the pit to attach a harness around the woman and hoist her out.
It took nearly an hour and a half to rescue the victim.
The woman had moderate injuries from the fall and was taken to a local hospital, according to the news release.
