The Role of Fluorescence Bacterial Scanning in the Identification & Treatment of Intertriginous Bacteria in Diabetic Feet

Fluorescence bacterial scanning can be a valuable diagnostic tool for clinicians. How effective is it in identifying intertriginous bacteria in the diabetic foot? A poster presented at SAWC Spring explores this tool’s potential.

The poster focused on 10 patients with diabetes who were receiving treatment for lower extremity wounds (not on the foot). Researchers used fluorescence imaging to scan for bacteria between the toes, noting that the scan detects bacterial loads of >104 CFU/gram. The study found that 5 patients had intertriginous bacteria and 2 of the 5 had small fissures on their feet, which could lead to bacterial infection.

Researchers emphasize fluorescence imaging can educate patients on the importance of cleansing between the toes and note the technology can improve patient adherence. The poster adds that imaging of bacterial burden can lead to bacterial infection management that is earlier and more proactive.
