Utility of Novel and Versatile Fabric-Based Brush Curettes for Wound Debridement and Sampling

Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness, ease of use, and functionality in various case scenarios, of a novel FDA Compliant sterile single-use disposable curettage system can both debride and sample chronic wounds
 
Methods: This is a small case series report of several patients with chronic wounds that required both superficial and deep debridement of wounds apparent on the skin surface, and wounds that tunneled subcutaneously.

Findings/Conclusion: The fabric-based curette devices under study when deployed in a paint brush like motion easily dislodged and removed necrotic surface tissue and slough completely and efficiently (rapidly) with minimal to no discomfort for the subject patient. When deployed as a replacement for a metal curette and pressed firmly on the eschar or fibrotic tissue areas, and rotated in a repetitive key-turning like motion the hook tips frictionally abraded and dislodged the areas of concern with less apparent discomfort that what would be expected under customary sharp debridement. In both scenarios, the hooked brush array trapped tissue specimens suitable for histologic, molecular, or microbiologic evaluation. This is the first report of this novel technology suitable for superficial and/or deep debridement and specimen collection.
