Combination Therapy with Ovine Deoxidized Keratin Hydrogel and Xenografts Help Heal Wounds That Have Failed to Progress and Completely Epithelialize
Patients and physicians are challenged with wounds that fail to reach the desired wound trajectory and lead to complete closure with full epithelialization. We present herein the cases of three chronic wounds that failed other standard and advanced wound modalities by using an approach that combines an ovine derived oxidozed keratin hydrogel (Keragel) and xenografts that are also keratin-derived (Keramatrix) in a step-wise fashion.
Time to closure and success rates were looked at for this novel product, as well as patient compliance. Both products delivered the desired outcome of complete wound closure. Most notable was the ability of the hydrogel version to aid in this process when patient compliance or coverage becomes an issue for application of grafts in either the office or the wound care clinic.
Frequently, clinicians must find the means to optimize care when grafts are not covered and yet still optimize treatment in the outpatient setting. Both products provide convenient and well-tolerated options when confronted with challenging wounds that fail to heal with other methods.
