Key Insights on Psoriasis in Patients With Skin of Color

Explore comorbidities in psoriasis: focus on patients with skin of color with Dr. Jarell.

Transcript:

I think it's worth mentioning about how there are racial and ethnic variations in psoriasis and within associated comorbidities.

So for example, the prevalence of obesity and cardiovascular disease seems to be quite distinctive among patients with skin of color.

Now on the right sided table, you have an association of self-reported race, ethnicity and quality of life.

And you can see that Black patients are far more likely to report a diminished quality of life as it pertains to their psoriatic disease with an average DLQI score of 8.3 versus 5.6 in whites.

And then you can see for DLQI greater than or equal to two, remember this is a scale that goes from zero to 10 patients who report two or greater.

You can see that it's significantly higher amongst Blacks, Asians, and Hispanic Latinos compared to whites.

And then in this next slide, I just want to show you what the skin of color inflammation looks like specifically within psoriasis.

You don't see that same whitish silvery micaceous scale that you would see in white person's skin.

Rather, it could be dusky gray or ashen in skin of color compared to white.

So Erythema can be slightly nuanced.

Again, violaceous dark brown or gray.
