Clinical Considerations in Patients With Psoriasis: Hepatic Disease
Transcript:
Patients with psoriasis are at an increased risk of developing hepatic disease.
And so to suffice it to say, this acronym here, MAFLD stands for Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Fatty Liver Disease.
And it in fact encompasses a spectrum of liver disease, which on the low end steatosis can be relatively benign all the way to metabolic dysfunction associated steatohepatitis or MASH, which is a severe form where you have fatty infiltration that's accompanied by inflammation and hepatocellular ballooning, ballooning that can actually lead to cirrhosis and even puts a patient at increased risk for hepatocellular carcinoma.
We need to be aware that there's an increased prevalence of fatty liver disease in patients with psoriasis.
Systemic medications that we're using can be deleterious to liver function and that if you let unidentified liver disease progress, it can lead to serious liver disease, including fibrosis, cirrhosis and early identification can actually allow for management and monitoring.
