Treating Onychomycosis and More

Laser and Light Therapies in PracticeThe FDA recently cleared Sciton’s Joule for patients with onychomycosis. According to Sciton, the Joule includes a versatile laser delivery technology with real-time temperature feedback for safe, effective cosmetic improvement of dermatologic conditions like onychomycosis. The Joule ClearSense was granted FDA 510(k) clearance for ablation, vaporization, incision, excision and coagulation of soft tissue, including matrixectomy, periungual and subungual warts, plantar warts, radical nail excision and neuromas. It is also indicated for the temporary increase of clear nil in patients with onychomycosis (eg, Trichophyton rubrum and T. mentagrophytes and/or yeasts such as Candida albicans).

The company explains that because onychomycosis is reported to affect up to 5% of the population worldwide, the FDA’s clearance of Sciton’s Joule ClearSense will allow practitioners to treat the millions of people affected by this condition.

“Onychomycosis can be very challenging to treat with the options we have traditionally had. Patients who have never before had any success with other fungal therapies are seeing significant improvements in their affected nails using ClearSense,” explains Jill S. Waibel, MD, founder and owner of the Miami Dermatology & Laser Institute in Florida.

Syneron Unveils New eTwo Platform

Syneron Medical, Ltd., unveiled its eTwo platform during the 2011 American Society of Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) conference in November 2011. The eTwo platform, along with its Sublime and Sublative applications, recently received FDA approval and CE mark for dermatological procedures requiring ablation and resurfacing in addition to non-invasive wrinkle treatment, according to the company.

The eTwo platform offers many new features, including the Sublime application, which uses the elos combination of infrared light and bi-polar radio frequency energies to remodel the deep dermal layer by stimulating new collagen growth. At the same time, Syneron’s Sublative fractionated bi-polar radio frequency technology places heat energy in the upper layers of the dermis, allowing for a significant increase in collagen and elastin production for a brighter, smoother complexion, according to the company. This Sublative technology offers a high dermal impact with low epidermal disruption. The new eTwo platform combines the Sublime and Sublative applications for comprehensive facial rejuvenation with one device and one treatment protocol, and using the applications in combination targets the upper and deep layers of the skin simultaneously. Combination treatment protocol requires one pass of Sublime followed by two passes of Sublative. The recommended treatment protocol is three treatments 4 to 6 weeks apart. Including prep, treatment time is under an hour. The average cost of the full series is $3,000.00 to $3,500.00.

“Over the years I’ve turned to Syneron’s elos technology to safely and effectively fulfill the demands of a much wider patient base,” says Amy Taub, MD, in practice in Lincolnshire, IL. “With the evolution of Sublime, Syneron has taken one of my go-to applications and further improved the safety profile and fine-tuned the user experience without substituting the efficacy and patient satisfaction I rely on.”

The Sublative application now also offers a new Sublative iD tip, a re-connectable solution to further maximize the Sublative treatments — a substantial improvement from the original one-time use tips. Practitioners can disconnect the tip and resume treatments while maximizing pulses when necessary.
