Highlights

This year, the AAD’s Summer Academy Meeting will feature a number of new sessions. The session, which will be will be presented from 3 pm to 4 pm Thursday, August 20, is approved by the American Board of Dermatology for Component 4, Evaluation of Performance in Practice, of Maintenance of Certification.

The popular “hands-on” courses also return for the Summer Meeting, including “Hands On: Dermal Fillers,” which focuses on 2 procedural workshops on dermal filler injections that will be offered to participants on Saturday, August 22 at 10 am to 12 pm and from 3 pm to 5 pm.

“These sessions offer small group, hands-on experience practicing injection techniques. Participants will be instructed on how to inject at various levels, including intradermal, subdermal and supraperiosteal locations,” explains Erik Joseph Stratman, MD, chair, Scientific Assembly Committee. Other aspects that will be covered in this session are approaches to patient assessment, treatment planning, filler selection and anatomical considerations to optimize cosmetic outcomes. High-fidelity cutaneous surgical training models also will be used to allow for realistic practice. These sessions are limited to 50 people, and registration is required.

“Hands On: The Standardized Patient” will offer 3 communication workshops that will focus on the following topics: Medication Management, Dealing with a Difficult Patient, and Breaking Bad News, says Dr. Stratman. Trained professionals will be on site to help dermatologists learn about real-life scenarios in a simulated office setting. Attendees will walk through the patient visit and, at the end, will receive feedback through a set of checklists on the patient encounter. Each of these 3 workshops will be given simultaneously, and are limited to one registrant per 30-minute workshop, but will be repeated several times throughout the meeting on Thursday, August 20, and Friday, August 21.
