2015 AAD Meeting Preview

March 2015

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) will its 73rd Annual Meeting at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California, on March 20 to 24, 2015.

Each year, the meeting features developing science from researchers, practice guidelines based on evidence-based medicine, opportunities for networking with peers, and a multitude of vendors showcasing products and services.

Here’s a highlight of some top sessions to attend at this year’s meeting.

The Plenary Session

The Plenary session will be held Sunday, March 22 from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm in Room 103 (South Bldg.) of the Moscone Center. Brett M. Coldiron, MD, president of the AAD, will wrap up his term and address the membership during the Plenary Session, and highlight the achievements of the AAD over the last. Mark Lebwohl, MD, will remark on the future with his President-Elect’s Address.

This year’s plenary features numerous noted speakers and topics. Bruce E. Wintroub, MD, will present The Clarence S. Livingood, MD Award and Lectureship, “Dermatology: Insuring the Future for the Patients We Serve.” James G. Krueger, MD, PhD, will present the Eugene J. Van Scott Award for Innovative Therapy of the Skin and Phillip Frost Leadership Lecture, focusing on the translational revolution for treatment of psoriasis with targeted therapeutics.

The Lila and Murray Gruber Memorial Cancer Research Award and Lectureship will feature Antoni Ribas, MD, who will speak on “Blocking BRAF and PD-1 to Treat Melanoma.” George Cotsarelis, MD, will present the Marion B. Sulzberger, MD Memorial Award and Lectureship, “Hair Loss: From Known Knowns to Unknown Unknowns.”

AAD Guest Speaker Baseball Hall of Fame’s Johnny Bench, will speak as well as Acting Surgeon General Boris D. Lushniak, MD, MPH.

Hot Topics

At the “Hot Topics” symposium, which will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday, March 21, dermatologists from around the world gather together, learn and discuss some of the contemporary issues that impact the dermatology field.  Symposium topics were based on meeting registrants’ top 3 choices reflecting the medical/surgical and social/economic concerns of the membership. The session presentations will be moderated by David Eric Cohen, MD. The topics and speakers include:

2:10 p.m.: Health Care Reform: How it Will Effect Us; Brent Moody, MD

2:30 p.m.: Sunscreens / Photoprotection/ Controversies in Vitamins D; Henry Lim, MD

3:10 p.m.: What’s New in Immunomodulation; Kenneth Gordon, MD, PhD

3:30 p.m.: Cosmeceuticals: Fact or Fancy; Zoe Draelos, MD

3:50 p.m.: Acne: What’s New; Jenny Kim, MD, PhD

4:10 p.m.: Confocal Microscopy and Non-Invasive imaging Techniques; Harold     Rabinovitz, MD

4:25 p.m.: Drug Reaction Update; Kanade Shinkai, MD, PhD

4:40 p.m.: Biologics in Dermatology: Safety Update; Bruce Strober, MD, PhD

 

Late Breaking Research

The Late Breaking Research sessions, which will take place on Friday and Saturday, will discuss ground-breaking scientific developments in dermatologic research and evaluate and apply information from recent investigations to clinical practice. The forums will highlight the latest observations in clinical, therapeutics, surgical, pediatric, dermatopathologic and basic research.
