The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) will hold its 72th Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado, on March 21-25, 2014. The meeting features developing science from researchers, practice guidelines based on evidence-based medicine, opportunities for networking with peers, and a multitude of vendors showcasing products and services.
Here’s a highlight of some sessions to attend at this year’s meeting.
The Plenary Session
Dirk Elston, MD, president of the AAD, will address the membership during the Plenary Session, and highlight the achievements of the AAD over the last. The session will be held Sunday, March 23 from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm in the Bellco Theatre. Brett M. Coldiron, MD, FAAD, will give remarks on the future with his President-Elect’s Address.
Henry W. Lim, MD, FAAD, will direct this year’s Plenary Session, which features expert lecturers presenting on a variety of prominent research topics and sociopolitical issues facing the specialty. Jack S. Resneck, Jr., MD, will present the Clarence S. Livingood, MD, Lecture, “The Future of Our Specialty in a Time of Unprecedented Change.” “Heal Thyself: Using Stem Cell Biology for Skin Diseases,” this year’s Marion B. Sulzberger, MD, Memorial Lecture, will be presented by Anthony Eugene Oro, MD, PhD.
The Lila and Murray Gruber Memorial Cancer Research Lecture will be given by Lynda Chin, MD. She will present “Genomic Medicine: Transforming Research and Patient Care.” Ervin H. Epstein, Jr., MD, will present the Eugene J. Van Scott Award for Innovative Therapy of the Skin and Phillip Frost Leadership Lecture, “Thwacking the Hedgehog.” This lecture will touch on Gorlin syndrome and the development of a molecularly targeted anti-BCC therapy.
This year’s guest lecturer is David C. Page, MD, director of the Whitehead Institute, professor of biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. His presentation, “Rethinking the Pristine X and Rotting Y Chromosomes,” will discuss the evolution of ordinary chromosomes that were once identical in males and females of our reptilian ancestors. Dr. Page will explore how these evolutionary and genomic perspectives provide insights into the roles of the X and Y chromosomes in health and disease.
Hot Topics
The “Hot Topics” symposium (S010), which will take place from 2 pm to 5 pm Friday, March 21 at the Annual Meeting, allows dermatologists from around the world to gather together, learn and discuss some of the hottest topics in the field. The session presentations will be moderated by David Eric Cohen, MD, and will review new and emerging therapies for the treatment of a range of dermatological diseases and aesthetic challenges in clinical practice.

The Friday, March 21st presentation on the Medical and Surgical Management of Nail Disorders, with Zoe Diana Draelos, MD, FAAD; Avner Shemer, MD; and Antonella Tosti, MD, runs from 1 pm to 3 pm in the Mile High Ball Room 2B. Dr. Draelos will discuss Nail Cosmetics and Aesthetics and allergic or other conditions that may result from nail adornments; Dr. Shemer will speak on the numerous causes of toenail and fingernail pain; and Dr. Tosti will discuss externally caused nail problems, such as nail biting and traumatic injuries, like punctate leukonychia.
Another session highlight includes the course Translating Evidence into Practice: Psoriasis Guidelines(C016), with Alice B. Gottlieb, MD, PhD, Mark Lebwohl, MD; and Henry W. Lim, MD, on Sunday March 23rd from 2 pm to 5 pm in Room 107/109. Dr. Lebwohl will discuss Guidelines: Systemic Therapies, while Dr. Lim will discuss Phototherapy for Psoriasis with A Case Study.
