Women With HS Have Higher Maternal and Obstetric Complications during Pregnancy
Lisa Kuhns, PhD
Women with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) who are planning pregnancy or are currently pregnant should receive coordinated care by dermatologists and obstetrical providers due to increased probability of complications.
Researchers performed a retrospective analysis using the IBM MarketScan® Commercial Claims Database to investigate maternal and obstetric outcomes and treatment utilization among women with HS. Their analysis included 998 pregnant women with HS and 5,065 age-matched pregnant women without HS. Information on claims related to diagnoses, procedures, and medications were analyzed.
Compared with the age-matched healthy controls, pregnant women with HS had lower odds of having livebirths. However, pregnant women with HS did have higher odds of having elective terminations, gestational hypertension, cesarean deliveries, and receiving HS-designated treatment during pregnancy.
“Pregnant women with HS have an increased probability of select complicated maternal and obstetric outcomes,” concluded the study authors. “Women planning for pregnancy or who are currently pregnant may benefit from coordinated care by dermatologists and obstetrical providers,” they continued.
