Single Assessment Needed for Evaluation of Rosacea Therapy Efficacy

There is no single assessment method for therapy efficacy evaluation in rosacea that is both convenient and accurate, according to recent review published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.

To review the efficacy evaluation tools for rosacea, researchers conducted an extensive literature search using PubMed, Web of Science, and other databases. Articles on efficacy evaluation methods for rosacea from 1995 to 2021 were identified.

Researchers found various methods for assessing curative effects in patients with rosacea in clinical practice and scientific research. Evaluation tools based on phenotypes and various questionnaires are most commonly used because of a lack of expense or complexity, but the inevitable subjectivity of these methods poses a challenge when comparing curative effect among different studies. Objective assessment tools like consecutive standardized skin surface biopsies, computer-aided image analysis, and biophysical parameter assessments are more precise and repeatable.

Study authors wrote, “For improving outcomes and facilitating academic exchanges, a well-validated gold standard evaluation tool is still needed.”
