Low Vitamin D Level Associated With Acne and Disease Severity
Lisa Kuhns, PhD
Patients with acne have significantly low levels of vitamin D, according to a recent study published in Dermatology.
Researchers aimed to determine the relationship between vitamin D level and acne, since vitamin D deficiency is frequently associated with several medical conditions. They assessed the association between vitamin D and acne severity in a meta-analysis by evaluating serum/plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) level, vitamin D deficiency, and the severity association between acne patients and healthy controls (HCs).
Vitamin D levels were negatively correlated with acne severity and vitamin D deficiency was more prevalent in acne patients than in HCs. The circulating 25(OH)D levels were also lower in patients with acne than in HCs.
“This meta-analysis demonstrated the significantly low vitamin D levels in acne patients,” concluded the study authors. “Also, there was evidence of an inverse association between vitamin D levels and acne severity,” they added.
