Itchiness Found to Profoundly Impact Patients With Psoriasis Quality of Life

A qualitative study recently published in The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology found that itchiness strongly impacts patients with psoriasis and their families.

Researchers conducted the study between August 2018 and January 2019 with five focus groups and 10 semistructured interviews. The views and experiences collected during these interviews underwent content analysis. Participants consisted of 25 individuals diagnosed with at least moderate plaque psoriasis alongside 11 family members.

The results of the narrative analysis showed three main themes associated with the impact of itchiness on patients’ quality of life. These themes were triggers (such as climate, emotions, and behaviors), the physical consequences (disruption of emotional well-being, sleep disturbance, and daily activities), and preventive and treatment strategies.

Researchers concluded that, “Itchiness impacts the quality of life in those with psoriasis and their family members. We strongly urge clinicians to inquire about and monitor the severity and impact of itchiness in psoriasis patients.”
