yamauchi_hsDr Yamauchi: I thought that it would be an interesting study to conduct because of the fact that there has not been any published literature, where there was a correlation between the increase in the patient's quality of life as their psoriasis got better, and the incidence or uptake of cosmetic procedures.
Since we do everything here, as I'm a psoriasis specialist, and I treat a lot of people with moderate-to-severe psoriasis, I thought it would be interesting to see if there was a correlation between cosmetic procedures and the clearance of the psoriasis.
Psoriasis has a major impact on the quality of life for patients suffering from this condition, because it's such a visible skin condition, people are inhibited from doing activities that we take for granted like swimming, going to the beach, going to the gym, things like that.
Because they were ashamed of their skin, they thought that they had no reason to undergo any cosmetic procedure like fillers or neurotoxins to make them look younger. That's the reason why we did the study to see if their skin got better for psoriasis, because if their quality of life got better, would that, in turn, make them undergo cosmetic procedures?
Yes, we did a tally on the types of cosmetic procedures that patient underwent after their psoriasis got better. We do everything here, but we found that Botox and neurotoxins were the ones that were requested the most.
Soft tissue application like fillers, like Restylane, chemical peelers microdermabrasion, micro-needling, laser resurfacing, CoolSculpting, skin tightening lasers, laser removal, PRP, and Baxter Lasers were the most common reported procedures that we did in our office. Neurotoxins, being the leader.
I think that when the patient is on a systemic agent or a biologic agent to treat the psoriasis, we found that in terms of adverse events, there were none. It's safe to perform cosmetic procedures in patient undergoing systemic or bios therapy to treat the psoriasis.
