Does Inflammatory Diet Affect Skin Disease Risk?

Pro-inflammatory dietary patterns do not appear to increase a person’s risk for inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and atopic dermatitis, according to a study published online in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

The cohort study involved women from the Nurses’ Health Study II: 85,185 women were in the psoriasis analysis, and 63,443 women were in the atopic dermatitis analysis. Each participant had her empirical dietary inflammatory pattern score calculated at baseline and every 4 years.

Among participants, researchers reported 1432 cases of psoriasis, 262 cases of psoriatic arthritis, and 403 cases of atopic dermatitis.

Researchers found no association between pro-inflammatory diets and risk of any of the 3 inflammatory skin conditions. In fact, hazard ratios that compared women in the highest and the lowest dietary inflammatory pattern quintiles were 0.99 for psoriasis, 1.22 for psoriatic arthritis, and 0.96 for atopic dermatitis.

“Our findings do not support dietary inflammatory potential as a risk factor for psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, or atopic dermatitis,” the researchers concluded.
