Diagnosis and Management of Nail Psoriasis and Nail Lichen Planus
According to a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, increased awareness and expanded management strategies for inflammatory nail diseases can improve patient outcomes.
Researchers aimed to review how timely recognition of clinical signs and symptoms is crucial for initiating appropriate treatment and alleviating the associated disease burden. They reviewed recent studies that have underscored the importance of advanced diagnostic techniques in improving the accuracy of diagnosis for inflammatory nail diseases. Techniques such as dermoscopy, capillaroscopy, and ultrasound have been increasingly utilized to enhance diagnostic precision.
Treatment strategies for nail psoriasis and nail lichen planus vary based on the extent of nail involvement. Therapeutic approaches are categorized into treatments targeting few (≤3) nails vs many (>3) nails. Recent research has explored the efficacy of novel psoriatic treatments, such as brodalumab, tildrakizumab, risankizumab, deucravacitinib, and bimekizumab, in improving nail outcomes. For nail lichen planus, emerging treatments include Janus kinase inhibitors and intralesional platelet-rich plasma injections.
The review emphasizes the necessity for heightened awareness among clinicians regarding the diverse clinical manifestations of inflammatory nail diseases and the adoption of comprehensive management strategies. By advancing diagnostic capabilities and expanding therapeutic options, clinicians can significantly enhance patient outcomes and quality of life.
In conclusion, continued research into diagnostic innovations and therapeutic advancements remains pivotal in addressing the complexities of inflammatory nail diseases and improving the overall management and prognosis for affected individuals.
