Consensus Recommendations on Holistic Skin Care Routines for Dermatologic Conditions
Consensus recommendations on providing practical guidance on the role of cleansing, moisturizing, and photoprotection (CMP) in holistic care to reach a better patient compliance, satisfaction, and treatment outcome are outlined in a recent publication in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.
Researchers aimed to review current clinical evidence, identify gaps, and provide practical guidance on holistic skin care routines with a focus on acne, rosacea, atopic dermatitis, and sensitive skin syndrome. Consensus statements were developed by an expert panel composed of 10 dermatologists from Australia, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, and Thailand. The Delphi approach was used during consensus recommendation development. A consensus was defined as ≥80% of participants rating a panel statement as ≥8 or a median rating of ≥8.
Consensus recommendations on holistic skin care were collated and included recommendations on CMP. The recommendations emphasize that it is crucial to initiate therapeutic treatment first and consider the patient’s individual skin needs to understand which CMP product to use in accordance with different states of the disease.
“Conditions such as acne, rosacea, and atopic dermatitis have underlying differences in pathogenesis and treatment, thus requiring individualized treatment and personalized skin care,” concluded the study authors. “While treatment is a definitive therapeutic component in the management of these conditions, adjunctive treatment is just as important in alleviating symptoms and signs of the disease, reducing the use of therapeutic agents and their side effects, and improving the quality of life,” they added.
