MediSafe Project Aims to Allow for Better Monitoring of Medication Intake

The MediSafe Project is a new mobile app and system that is designed to remind patients when to take their medications — and to provide loved ones and caregivers with reminders as well to “help families get better, together.”

Omri Shor, the MediSafe Project CEO, and his brother started the idea for the new app, which is available for Android devices and compatible with iPhones and iPads, after their father accidentally took a double dose of insulin. The easy-to-use interface provides reminders about when patients need to take medication and also sends reminders to loved ones and caregivers if the patient has missed a dose. The app also lets these individuals know when the patient has taken medication as needed.

According to information on the MediSafe Project website, more than 700,000 people were hospitalized in the United States in 2008 because they skipped or took an incorrect dose of medication, and, statistically, an American every 19 minutes dies because of medication non-compliance. The goal of the MediSafe Project is to increase “the power of family and friend support systems to cause positive, healthy outcomes for each other.”

Also according to information on the MediSafe Project website, the system will be available to individuals without smartphones, via an automated phone system, in 2013. The automated phone system will allow patients to record medication doses via touchtone, and caretakers will be able to receive alerts via incoming, automated calls when patients appeared to have missed a dose.
