A blind online survey found that more consumers are choosing non-invasive cosmetic treatments as they seek to improve skin tone and smooth wrinkles. Microdermabrasions, wrinkle-relaxing injections, chemical peels and laser/light procedures rank as the top 4 cosmetic treatments, according to the 2013 American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) Consumer Survey on Cosmetic Dermatologic Procedures. More than 6,300 consumers were asked for their opinions on cosmetic treatments and ratings for 10 specific procedures.
The survey revealed that consumers most frequently seek microdermabrasions to refresh skin tone and treat age spots. Not only are 4 out 5 respondents satisfied with their microdermabrasions results, but 50% of respondents who have never had the rejuvenation procedure report they are considering it. Wrinkle-relaxing injections ranked second in the survey with 92% of consumers satisfied with the procedure — the highest satisfaction rating among all 10 categories.
“Wrinkle-relaxing injections are growing in popularity. Last year, ASDS members performed 1.5 million neuromodulator treatments — a nearly 25% increase over the previous years,” explains Timothy C. Flynn, MD, ASDS president. “We predict these numbers will continue to rise as three out of every five respondents in our survey say they are considering getting a wrinkle-relaxing injection.”
Chemical peels garnered an 86% satisfaction rating. In 2012, ASDS members performed 414,000 chemical peels. Half of the survey respondents report they are considering undergoing a chemical peel in the future. The survey also found that nearly two-thirds of respondents are considering a laser/light procedure to help reduce fine lines, wrinkles, blemishes and pigmentation. Of the survey respondents, 4 out 5 who had the procedure say they were satisfied with the results. The popularity of this procedure has been steadily growing, with ASDS performing almost 1.7 million laser/light procedures in 2012 — a 5% increase over 2011.
