Case Reports: Insights Into Pediatric Eczema
During the second day of Spring Dermatology Week 2024, Ms Peggy Vernon, a certified pediatric nurse practitioner and owner of Creekside Skin Care Consultants, and Dr Joy Wan, an assistant professor of dermatology at Johns Hopkins University, outlined the objectives of their presentation,” Management of Pediatric Eczema / Case Discussion.”
They outlined the objectives of their presentation, which included reviewing nonsteroidal medications for atopic dermatitis and discussing treatment strategies and extracutaneous concerns for pediatric patients.
The first case presented was a 4-month-old baby with atopic dermatitis, whose parents were struggling with managing his condition. The baby's family history and living situation, coupled with the severity of his condition, posed challenges to treatment. However, a comprehensive plan involving topical treatments, baths, and education was developed to address the baby's needs. Bleach baths and wet wraps were among the strategies recommended to manage his condition effectively.
In contrast, the second case involved a 17-year-old patient with chronic eczema on his feet and ankles. Despite previous treatments, including topical steroids, his condition persisted. The presentation emphasized the importance of tailoring treatments to the individual patient's needs and circumstances. For this patient, a combination of topical treatments, including steroids and nonsteroidal options, was prescribed along with education on proper skin care practices.
Throughout the presentation, the importance of considering the psychological impact of eczema on both patients and their families was highlighted. Strategies to support families and provide ongoing education and reassurance were discussed, particularly in cases where parents may feel overwhelmed by their child's condition.
Overall, the presentation underscored the complexities of managing pediatric eczema and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach involving health care providers, patients, and their families to achieve optimal outcomes.
