Song of the Day

fig 1I enjoy listening to music and will often play a “song of the day” before starting my outpatient clinic or hospital rounds. Not only does this put me in a good mood, but it also creates a feeling of camaraderie with others who are working with me that day, such as residents, medical students, and nurses. Listening to music together creates a shared experience that boosts our team morale and puts all of us in a good frame of mind for caring for our patients that day.

Sticker Colors

fig 2Kids love stickers. To get them to use treatments, a sticker chart can be a powerful tool. I think it is good to offer pink Frozen stickers and blue Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle stickers. However, I do not presuppose based on gender which stickers the child would prefer; they can pick for themselves.

Intake Forms

fig 3Have your staff members quickly glance at the intake form as they walk with the patient (and hopefully also engage in some friendly conversation). Your staff should know to show the patient where they are to sit and where they can hang or place their coat, and to prepare them accordingly. If your patient has written on their intake form that they are here to see the dermatologist for a plantar wart, they should be instructed to take their shoes off. If they indicate they are here for a full skin examination, they should be handed a gown. These little efficiencies are critical to a high-volume practice.
