Treating Resistant Rosacea, Repurposing Supplies, Improving the Perioral Area, and Talking About Sun Exposure

patient with pillTip 1: Treating Resistant Rosacea

There are many options for treating rosacea, but in resistant cases, I have had luck with systemic metronidazole 500 mg to 1 g daily for 2 to 3 weeks. The major side effect is the metallic taste, which unfortunately is the factor limiting the use of this very effective treatment.

As we get older, our smile widens and more upper teeth are visible. The width of the smile depends on the strength of the risorius and the resistance of the skin to compression. The facial skin thins as we age and the balance is tilted to the risorius muscle. By injecting a sheet of filler laterally to the oral commissure, one can strengthen the skin in this area, reducing the wrinkling that occurs laterally to the mouth and producing a narrower, more youthful-appearing smile.

To my older patients with fair complexions who have a history of excessive sun exposure, I compare sun damage to smoking: the longer it happens, the more likely the consequences.
