Clinicians can address exuding wounds with a new absorbent dressing.
Biosorb™ Dressing Gelling Fiber forms a gel when it achieves contact with an exuding wound, and is easily removable, notes the manufacturer Acelity. The company says the dressing is indicated for a variety of exuding wounds such as leg ulcers, pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, surgical wounds exuding fluid, partial thickness burns, traumatic wounds and oncology wounds.
Biosorb’s carboxymethylcellulose fibers permit the dressing to absorb many times its own weight in fluid, which the company says protects the wound edge and surrounding skin. Acelity adds that the cellulose fibers reinforce the dressing so it stays strong when wet. Biosorb is available in a non-silver format with the antimicrobial silver version due to be available early next year, according to Acelity.

A recently FDA-approved staple may help provide improved fixation in foot and ankle surgery.
Surgeons may employ the O.S.2®-VP staple in the fixation of Akin osteotomies as well as chevron/Austin procedures, according to the manufacturer In2Bones. The company cites the device’s polyether ether ketone (PEEK)-OPTIMA® composition and adds that due to the staple’s non-allergenic qualities, surgeons can use it in patients who may be sensitive to nitinol.
In2Bones notes the sterile O.S.2-VP is available with a 9-mm interaxis in angles of 26 or 90 degrees. The 26-degree angle will match the metaphysis of the phalanx, according to the company.

An emerging prefabricated orthotic reportedly offers the same support as a custom device but at a lower price.
DynaFlange® orthotics, which were previously custom but are available now as prefab devices, provide enhanced shock absorption and dynamic energy return, notes the manufacturer, Apex Foot Health. The company says the orthosis’ flange flexes during heel strike, storing the energy that releases during the subsequent phases of gait, which positions the foot for optimal propulsion.
Apex says the DynaFlange orthotic also improves the center of pressure and stability through all phases of the gait cycle. The company notes the device guides the foot back to neutral, leading to better posture while patients stand or ambulate.

An emerging fibular nail offers a simple surgical solution for fractures.
The FibuLock™ Nail is the first intramedullary device with the same indications as plates, notes the manufacturer Sonoma Orthopedics. The company notes the product provides anatomic reduction and the FibuLock’s anatomic angulation combined with the screw-targeting outrigger ensures the syndesmosis screw will be parallel to the plafond.
The FibuLock provides 2.5 mm of compression, according to the company. Sonoma adds that the device’s “Quick Thread” screws bore into bone twice as fast as traditional screws. The company also notes the FibuLock has lower cost and fewer complications.
