A Force For Fusion
An innovative new system may be just the thing to facilitate improved fixation for common lower extremity procedures.
With the FuseForce, one can fixate fractures, fusions or osteotomies of the bones in the forefoot, midfoot and rearfoot, according to the manufacturer Solana Surgical/Wright Medical. The device is a shape-memory, compression-ready fixation system and its compressive properties and stepped-tooth design resist pullout, according to the company.
Solana Surgical/Wright Medical adds that the FuseForce system comes sterile with disposable corresponding instrumentation and provides a constant compressive force due to its compression on release design. The company notes it is available in a full spectrum of sizes from 8x8 mm to 25x22 mm with leg diameters matched to overall size. Furthermore, the company says the inserter/implant combo allows for no-touch implantation with a simple twist-release-compress design.

Hammertoe Implantation Is Just Two Steps Away
Surgeons now have another intriguing option for hammertoe implant surgery.
The Two-Step Hammer Toe Implant System reportedly enables surgeons to fuse the distal interphalangeal and proximal interphalangeal joints, according to the manufacturer Trilliant Surgical. The company says the implant system offers 3.4 mm, 4.5 mm and 5.5 mm diameter spades with 3 mm and 4 mm diameter threads in lengths ranging from 6 to 30 mm.
The device is composed of a cannulated, titanium alloy. In addition, Trilliant Surgical says the implant is self-drilling with a self-tapping threaded section that facilitates rapid placement down the central axis of the phalanx. The company notes that the device has a tri-spade stem for multiplane stabilization of the joint with optional spade placement orientation in the proximal or distal phalanx.

Ex-Fix Solutions For The Whole Foot
Are you looking for a fixation system that you can employ for various external fixation applications in the foot and ankle?
The System for Externally Aligning Limbs (S.E.A.L.) Fracture Fusion System is reportedly more versatile than other systems that only address the forefoot or the rearfoot, according to the product’s manufacturer DNE, which cites the device’s angular ability. The company says with the S.E.A.L. system, one can use a 3 mm, 4 mm or 5 mm pin by inserting that size ball collet in the clamp.
DNE says the S.E.A.L. clamps rotate 360 degrees and lock in eight different positions, and the ball collet inside the clamp also rotates in every direction. The company adds that the S.E.A.L. rail system works interchangeably with the S.E.A.L. circular frame.

A New Onychomycosis Solution
Now there is a new avenue of treatment for patients with onychomycosis.
Efinaconazole 10% (Jublia) is the first topical triazole approved for the treatment of distal lateral subungual onychomycosis, according to the manufacturer Valeant Pharmaceuticals. The company notes one would apply Jublia daily to the nail using a bottle with a built-in, flow-through brush applicator. Valeant Pharmaceuticals says the topical dries quickly with no need to remove any excess.
Valeant Pharmaceuticals emphasizes that with Jublia, there are no concerns for systemic side effects like drug-drug interactions or acute liver injury. The company cites two positive studies involving a total of 1,655 patients with onychomycosis, with complete cures being reported in 17.8 percent and 15.2 percent of Jublia-treated patients in the two studies.
