An Alternative Bone Graft
For surgeons searching for an alternative to autografts for hindfoot and ankle fusion, a new bone graft may be a solution.
Augment® Bone Graft has two primary components: medical grade beta-tricalcium phosphate (b-TCP) granules (1000-2000 μm) and recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor BB (rhPDGF-BB) solution (0.3 mg/mL), which one combines and applies to the site, according to the manufacturer Wright Medical. The company notes that the graft’s b-TCP facilitates a porous, osteoconductive scaffold that supports cell attachment as well as the delivery of rhPDGF-BB.
Wright Medical adds that Augment is the only biologic product indicated for open hindfoot and ankle arthrodesis. It cites level 1 evidence of the graft’s safety and efficacy, noting that numerous clinical trials have proven Augment to be safe.

Full Cannulation For Hammertoe
With a new hammertoe system, surgeons can treat variations in patient anatomy.
The HammerFuze™ Hammertoe Compression System consists of fully cannulated implants and instruments that allow for surgical precision when treating hammertoes, according to the manufacturer Vilex. The company adds that the system offers multiple sizes in oder to address differences in anatomy and the bone quality of phalanges.
Vilex says the implants are self-tapping and self-drilling. It also notes that the stop drill, broach and driver are cannulated, and surgeons can use K-wires for temporary stabilization. The company says the HammerFuze has a CompTwist™ helical barb design to provide more compression during arthrodesis procedures.
