Orthotic Support Even When Wet
This summer, patients who need orthotics don’t need to stay out of the water.

The Aquamaxx is a waterproof orthotic that the manufacturer Footmaxx says has been designed to correct the individual gait abnormalities of each patient. The company says the orthosis comes with DrySole material as a top and bottom cover, which creates a waterproof barrier and fights the delamination and damage that water can cause.

Footmaxx says the device also comes with Heelmaxx pads, which offload the central portion of the calcaneus to relieve heel pain in patients with conditions including plantar fasciitis, heel spurs and Sever’s disease.

Aquamaxx also has additional heel cushioning to provide more relief from heel pain for people with a variety of foot conditions, according to the company.

Clearer Picture Of Fungal Infection
A new advanced test can provide a clearer picture of toenail fungus.

The new proprietary polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay can identify pathogens in nail unit keratin, according to the manufacturer Bako Integrated Physician Solutions. The company notes the test will complement high sensitivity periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) and gomori methenamine silver (GMS) histochemical stains, saying it has superior specificity as it identifies both the organism’s genus and species.

Bako notes the PCR assay permits more targeted patient care when one is using either topical or oral antifungals. The company adds that its PCR assay results are available in about three days, rather than the four weeks that cultures require.

Speed And Stability
Three legs in a new implant provide stability for patients having distal first metatarsal osteotomies.

The Speed Triad Nitinol Bone Fixation Implant’s three legs allow six-point fixation, according to the manufacturer BioMedical Enterprises (BME). The company says the patented design can provide a simple and reproducible way to compress osteotomies continuously for mild to moderate bunions.

The Speed Triad implant is composed of the shape memory metal nitinol and BME notes its bowing bridge and converging proximal leg provide compression along the long axis of the bone segments. The company notes the implant includes Fixation Recovery, through which the implant maintains compression during repetitive loading. The company says the Speed Triad is available in multiple configurations for medial and dorsal placement along the distal first metatarsal.

Error-Free Splinting
An innovative splint helps casting technicians save time and eliminate errors.

The Scotchcast Quick Step Double Sided Felt Roll Splint has felt on both sides of the splint, which the manufacturer 3M says can help eliminate the potential for wrong-side application. The company notes the felt is soft and breathable. The product also provides comfort and protection along with water-repellent technology to keep skin dry and reduce the risk of skin maceration.

The Scotchcast has a seven-layer fiberglass material that 3M says responds to water temperature so one can customize mold time. The company adds that once activated, the splint will conform to body contours for immobilization and sets in 20 minutes. The manufacturer says the cast is lightweight and low profile for patient comfort.
