Praising The ACFAP Meeting And The Benefits Of Specialty Organizations

Patrick DeHeer DPM FACFAS

In addition to the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), there are many outstanding related specialty organizations available to podiatric physicians that provide additional educational opportunities and camaraderie for like-minded practitioners. I am a member of many of these organizations and they have added tremendous value to my career.

One organization that I have a long history with is the American College of Foot and Ankle Pediatrics (ACFAP). Louis DeCaro, DPM, the President of ACFAP, has done a tremendous job of building upon the organization’s rich history to make it the leader in pediatric lower extremity education and information for both practitioners and the general public interested in lower extremity healthcare for children.

After many years without any annual meeting, ACFAP held a meeting in Miami in April 2015. I had the honor of participating as a lecturer and an attendee at this year’s meeting. It was outstanding with numerous nationally recognized speakers participating. The meeting was interactive and engaging. The day before the meeting, ACFAP arranged an outing at the Everglades National Park, providing a truly unique day trip for interaction with others interested in pediatric foot and ankle.

The 2016 meeting has shaped up to be a truly exceptional educational opportunity. The meeting is scheduled for April 8-9 at the beautiful Tenaya Lodge located at Yosemite National Park. The conference schedule with a list of speakers and topics is available at https://www.acfap.org/events.html . Louis has put together a list many of national leaders in pediatric foot and ankle covering a wide scope of topics. The quality of the program combined with the uniquely beautiful location makes this an excellent choice for continuing education for those interested in pediatrics.

The ACFAP is just one example of many available options for related specialty organizations available to podiatric physicians. I would encourage you to consider joining any group that piques your interest. It can be one of the best investments you will make in your professional career.

I would also like to take this opportunity to wish my readers and all of my podiatric colleagues happy holidays! I would also like to thank the staff at Podiatry Today for the outstanding work and dedication to the podiatric profession. I would also like to thank the APMA staff for all its hard work and commitment to the podiatric profession. Be well and stay safe! I look forward to continuing the conversation in 2016.
