Researchers at the International Stroke Conference 2022 presented new findings from the ASSIST Technical Approaches Registry, a prospective, global consecutive registry of patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) aimed to provide insights into outcomes for mechanical thrombectomy (MT).

“While novel retrievable stent devices have been used in recent clinical trials of MT in acute ischemic stroke (AIS), few studies have evaluated differences in outcomes in MT technical approaches to optimize reperfusion success,” said Rishi Gupta, MD, Wellstar Health System, Marietta, GA, and co-researchers.

A total of 1300 patients with AIS secondary to anterior circulation large vessel occlusions (LVO) undergoing treatment with interventional techniques across 72 study sites were included in ASSIST. Participants were split into the following 3 cohorts: Stent Retriever Classic (n = 250), Combination Approach (n = 698), and Direct Aspiration (n = 532).

Functional outcome of mRS 0-1 at 90 days was the primary clinical outcome.

After the presentation, Section Editor Amrou Sarraj, MD, shared with Neurology Learning Network that the findings are “demonstrating stent retriever approach with better first pass effect than combination or aspiration alone. Combination approach takes longer, and direct aspiration requires more device passes.”

Researchers concluded that results from the ASSIST registry will aid MT outcomes in AIS.
