Videos From Expo: Hi-Tech Medication Tracking

Nick Adams, MPA, special operations lieutenant at Cobb County Fire Emergency Services in the Greater Atlanta area, thought his 29-station agency had a tight handle on its controlled substance system and their ability to track the use and administration of medications by street crews.

“We thought we were doing a pretty good job,” said Adams. “We had no idea we were doing things wrong.”

The service's archaic log book system left open the possibility of inaccurate records and user diversion, and hindered “cradle-to-grave” tracking capability of the agency’s supplies. Log books were often forgotten with no follow-up mechanism, making real-time auditing of the inventory difficult.

Hear Adams describe how a new electronic controlled substance tracking system improved the accuracy and security of Cobb County’s medication records during the Data & Technology Summit at EMS World Expo 2017 in Las Vegas.
