It depends on what you’re going to have them do, said Sean Kaye, EMT-P, who manages the EMS data systems for West Virginia and North and South Carolina. Running reports, troubleshooting issues, tech support, QA/QI—there are many specialty areas in IT and each requires a defined skill set.

Kaye visits EMS agencies throughout the three states, teaches them about EMS data, listens to their concerns, and devises fixes among the state, individual agencies, his own data system and other stakeholders. A common question relates to hiring a data manager.
